Balea Lake

Hi,

We will be in Romania for two wees and also want to stop for 2 days in Balea lake. One day to go up and walk around and one day to walk to the waterfalls.
We will be there in August.

My questions are:
1. How crowded is it during the weekends? Is it Ok or should we wait for a week day?
2. It's difficult to find accomadation for this time of year. The cabin at the top doesn't seem to have any room. Can you recommend anything else in that area?
3. Are there other nice walks around the lake?

1. It's naturally more crowded on weekends than on weekdays, but not incredibly crowded.

2. Did you actually contact the Balea lake chalet ? I doubt it's fully booked 4-5 months ahead.
Anyway, there's also Paltinu chalet (company site, scroll down the page).

3. Yes. Here are two short ones: 1, 2.

I can't speak to your first two questions as I was there in the first week of October and stayed in Sibiu, but there are several trails from the immediate vicinity of the lake, including a couple that climb the ridges above and offer great views without a large time investment or continuing as far as you would like into the mountains. You can pick up a detailed map of the Fagaras including hiking trails at book stores in the region.
