Yerevan - KarsHi,
I am travelling from Yerevan to Kars (Turkey) early next month, and am finding it difficult to find any information on any routes we could take. From what I can see, there might be a bus between Yerevan and Alkhaltsikhe (Georgia), and, from there, there does not seem to be a clear route. Has anyone got any experience of this route, or could simply advise? Also, should we be prepared to stay overnight in Alkhaltsikhe?

I used that road from Istanbul to Georgia last summer. From Akhaltsikhe you will reach the border after 17 km. Then you will reach to Posof and by 20 km climbing will reach to Ilgar Pass at 2550 m. You will pass Damal, Ardahan and at least reach to Kars. If you want to see Ani and Armenia from Turkey you must go 50 km more from Kars. The roads are good and safe. You can see the roads and daily maps of my trip from my blog but unfortinately it is Turkish. I wiil go to Georgia and Armenia this July with my two friends. My blog is www.bisikletgezgini.blogspot.com
If you need any information or help in Turkey you can call me.
Have a good journey.

2Envoy Tour runs a weekly trip from Yerevan to Tbilisi, and from there it should be easier to find a regularly running bus/minibus to Akhaltsikhe. Between there and the boarder, from what I understand, you either need to hike or get a taxi.
I think yes, you should think about staying overnight although maybe Tbilisi would be better than Akhaltsikhe, especially if you use the Envoy tour. Yerevan all the way through to Kars will be a LONG day.
