sogamoso and surrounds - recommendations?

hi, we are in villa de leyva at the moment (ducking and weaving the mosquitos haha) and were thinking of heading over to the area of Lago Tota and Sogamaoso. We do not have a lot of information on the region and was hoping someone could recommend the best town to find lodgings in (Sogamoso, mongui or iza or elsewhere). Also does anyone recommend any hostel/lodging in particular - finca san pedro looks nice but a little expensive for us (70k for a double - we have been spending half this elsewhere in the region). Any advice is much appreciated as always

If you're looking for cheap accomodation, there is a good hotel just at the bus station in Sogamoso.

I just spent one day in the area and the villages around. I much prefer the Cocuy area, for instance.

finca san pedro is overpriced for what you get. Its nice enough - but its not a real 'finca' - there is no farm just some gardens and it is almost in the city. Sogamoso itself is underwhelming but the surrounding towns are nice and the Paramo is worth a trip.

I remember a vineyard near there. Also, Paipa and it's hot baths, the lagoon near the town and other things, the handicrafts (I remember visiting a site where a German dude did things with metal).

I'm surprised to hear you are encountering mozzies at such a high altitute. I though they didn't like it up so high? Can anyone enlightening me about that? Thanks.

Buen viaje!

they are terrible - could not sleep at all first night. A girl at my hostel here said they are much worse than she experienced on the lost city trek. On top of mosquitos there are sand flies and another insect (small black one) that has caused my wifes hand to swell so much we had to go to the hospital (same girl said she encountered these nasty critters in guyana and had similar problems).
Maybe all these critters know that so many people come here for vacations?!!! Some say its because of the lack of rain?!!?

Where I live (Zipaquirá) you can be bothered by mosquitoes at night, but by closing windows/doors just before sundown you can avoid them.

I enjoyed sogamoso and surrounds, not a pretty town but good enough I stayed at finca san pedro and it all was ok and fair, small finca but finca still, good atmosphere and pretty convenient to move on to surroundings. Surrounds like tota lake, paramo treks and visiting towns and markets are all meaningful, eat a trout at don lucho restaurant in aquitania... augly town but great trout in there.

We stayed in a cute hotel in Mongui just across from the historic stone bridge, after the plaza as you go through town. There is small cafe atached, same owners, very nice. A good deal for the two of us, I think 25,000 COP each? Not too bad considering it was semana santa and it such a nice place. Mongui is nice for a couple of days, only complaint was no internet shops open on good friday! But a nice pizzia joint with good real pizza between the hotel and the plaza. Just don{t get the hawian, putting hot dogs and pinapple on a pizza doesn{t make it hawian! But the veggie pizza was wonderful.
