Cusco to Agua Calientes train

If we buy a return ticket for this train in Cusco is it possible to break the return journey at Ollantaytambo and continue back to Cusco the following day?

Can't answer you question but I'd recommend you to buy Ollantaytambo - Aguas Calientes round trip if you want to visit Ollantaytambo.
The train station is no longer in Cusco but in Poroy which is 11 Km from Cusco.
You can travel to OIlantaytambo by (chartered) colectivo, taxi or local bus. A ride to Ollantaytambo with a taxi or colectivo lasts about 90'

Is it worth staying in Agua Calientes for a few days... Any best cheap place recommendations...?

...Can you walk to Machu Picchu from there...?

We took a collectivo (shared van, cheap and easy) from Cusco to Ollantaytambo. Then we booked one of the trains from Olly to Aguas Caliente and back to see Machu Picchu. Ollantaytambo is a much more pleasant place to stay IMO.
