Puglia v Sicilia beach towns

Hi guys. My partner and I want to spend a week on the seaside in south Italy, but are completely torn as to where we should go.. we can either do the coast of Puglia, most likely Polignano a Mare at the end of July, or somewhere in Sicily, possibly Palermo at the end of August.
Is there any advantage to one over the other? It would cost us about 100 euro more to get to Sicily, but other than that I'm not too sure. Is one place more expensive than the other? Are the beaches better? Is the food more delicious?? (most important!) I've tried to compare but have no definitive results.
We're a young couple and just basically want to frolic in the waves and eat, if that makes any difference. Any info anyone would like to share would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance :)

Two very,very different places!

One is a small town..the other a city of nearly one million people.

If you just want a 'sitting on the beach' type holiday,I wouldn't go to Palermo. Its highlights are other things (though it has some reasonably nice beaches around the city).

The food is great though.

Don't forget too that pretty much every beach in Italy will be packed at that time of year (or at least, all the famous ones and all the places you can access on public transport).

food: great everywhere
cost: the same
best beaches: province of trapani in sicily and eolie isles, gargano coast and salento in puglia, + tremiti isles.
best cities: palermo is amazing, cefalù near palermo, mazara del vallo (province of trapani). Puglia: Vieste and peschici (foggia), Alberobello, polignano (bari) ostuni (brindisi) , otranto lecce gallipoli (lecce)

I think the end of august is the best period for traveling
