Outer Hebrides: Barra to LewisMy husband and I will be in Scotland this June (at least, I hope so) and I want to get to both Barra and Lewis. It looks as if the only way to do this is to go back to the mainland of Scotland in between, or else take a very long island hopping time about it. I wish I could do the second, but I can't. I'm still in the early planning stages, but we only have about two weeks for the entire trip.
Have I missed something more expeditious?
Thanks for any advice!

1The inter-island hopping part is nice, though. You can go through Eriskay, or via the Castlebay-Lochboisdale ferry, up Uist then Berneray to Leverburgh.
Not sure going via mainland is much shorter...
Will you be driving or using public transport?
Driving, you have to consider the price, planning timetables, and need to book ferry trips.

2The inter-island route above is very scenic and as buses meet boats very doable by public transport. There is something called the 'Western Isles Overland route' which consists of buses and ferries and will get you in one day from Castlebay to Stornoway. At the moment only the winter timetable is up (http://www.cne-siar.gov.uk/travel/busservice/current/indexo.asp), but that will give you an idea.
I would personally stop at one of the islands overnight, possibly two if you have two weeks, there is loads to see along the way (the bus/ferry) trip is quite scenic, but you'll be bypassing a lot of cool stuff, so pick somewhere to have a break along the way!

3Thank you both! The problem with any trip always seems to be finding the balance between passing up too much, and trying to see too much. I've done both--maybe someday I'll get it just right!
We're trying to keep driving to a minimum, as travel's so much more fun when both of us can look around us at the same time. I'm glad to get info on a route that can be done without a car.
