Spending 4 months in Kyoto

Hi all

My husband and I will move to Kyoto next month for a period of 4 months.
Since he will spend most of the days working in Kyoto University, I am afraid that I will be a bit bored.
Does anyone aware of (long period) activities / courses (workshops) / volunteering projects / or even jobs for foreigners in Kyoto? I am interesting mainly (but not exclusively) in art related topics.
I have a post-graduate degree in art therapy with experience in working with kids, so suggestions in that direction will be so great.

Best,
Siv

Lucky you!

...that I will be a bit bored.
I wouldn't get bored in and around Kyoto with sightseeing alone. As for more meaningful activities, I don't think you have enough time to arrange for a real job. Also most jobs would require you to work for a longer amount of time anyway. So your best bet are probably volunteer work or some kind of workshop. While Kyoto might be best as for transport time, you could also look into Osaka.

How good is your Japanese?

If you just want to spend time, you could give private English (or other language) lessons. Posting a message on a forum such as http://www.japan-guide.com/forum/quedisplay.html should quickly get you some contacts.

Another option could be to contact kindergartens or schools explaining your situation (in simple English) and asking whether you could give free art/English/whatever classes. As this is a rather unusual proposal, I would not expect lots of replies, but some more adventurous kindergarten might very well go for it. Your ideal profile for this would be: female, Caucasian, without visible tattoos.

Or you could study Japanese. Many local city offices offer free classes run by volunteers, or you could sign up for a real class somewhere.

Hi bamse

Thank you very much for your response.
Since I don't know Japanese maybe the free classes are a good option, plus it will help me to meet other people.

I really hope that Kyoto and surrounding will be as good as other people describe it :)

Good advice Bamse.

However, from what I see everyday in Melbourne, Australia,

female, caucasian, no visible tattoos

is becoming a rare species.
