Mobile (cell) phone coverage in Ladakh

Hi,
Would be able to use a mobile (cell) phone in Ladakh? Meaning, is there a mobile coverage?
Thanks.

There is coverage in Leh and in several places along the Indus valley but as far as I know there is still no roaming for phones from outside Jammu & Kashmir (at least there was none when I visited in 2011) and getting a local SIM card is not that straightforward. I heard that you would need a local to vouch for you to get a local SIM card.

Why not leave it at home.

Meczko, thank you for your reply. So, the one I use in Europe is useless in Ladakh.

It was useless in summer 2011. Not 100% sure about this year.

Coverage is bad in Ladakh and surrounding areas, if you have a BSNL sim it keeps working in some places where the others drop out.

Magiclands, thanks for your reply and info! I checked and my operated does not have roaming agreement with BSNL unfortunately ("only" with Aircel, Bharti, Escotel, Idea, and Vodafone).

BSNL, Airtel and Aircel work in Leh. At a few other places, BSNL works but coverage is not too good. In any case you MUST have a postpaid connection, not a prepaid one. Now there are satellite phones at many places (including Lake Pangong) which you can use to call any number in India for Rs.2- per minute (as of Jan2012). Sometimes, your travel agent may give you one on loan if he is a local and can trust you.

Write direct to me vu2pcd at gmail and I will be happy to share my experiences from my 4 Ladakh visits.
Accessing the internet is a bit of a problem at my home since I live in the woods where we have no telephone lines or cable internet. So EMail is the only way out.

Pradeep (in the woods near Ahmedabad).

Hi vu2pcd, many thanks for your reply! I have prepaid subscription and my operator has a roaming agreement with Aircel. I can handle no coverage in remote areas. To have a possibility to send sms from Leh would be great though.

There is coverage of this topic on Indiamike.com
Last time I was in Ladakh a non Indian phone didnt work there. I borrowed a Ladakhi friend's one and charged it to the max to phone the wife in the UK. There are problems with getting a phone there for non indian residents. Address , passport number, Mother's maiden name etc etc.
Coverage for the phones that work exists in the Indus valley and down to Upshi on the Mahe road. Intermittent on the manali road, dont know about Lamayuru onwards. prone to cut outs and security blocking because there is a quarrel with the Chinese........
