well my thoughts exactly, we budgeted enough to stay in hostels. And I dont think I would be to comfortable letting a stranger into my house. So couchsurfing has been ruled out.

What would be your thoughts on routes if flying from Australia. I was thinking the following:

Australia > Portugal/Spain > Germany > czech Repbulic/Austria > Italy > Australia

Why not? Say...fly into Madrid (or Lisbon) and out of Rome.

If you can get decent prices for those destinations...logistically in one side and out of the other makes sense....

Sounds reasonable, indeed.

Of course, you don't need to fly every leg of your trip. From Portugal or Spain to Germany might be a bit long by train or bus (if there's nothing in France you would like to visit), but from Germany you can easily travel by train to the Czech Republic and Austria.

Ok one quick question.. This may seem pretty dumb but....

I google dollar converter to see what the AUD would convert to in Euro. Now it's saying if I had 7000AUD it would convert to approx 5500euro.

My question, does this mean I will travel with less savings? Or is that a sufficient amount to travel with for 8weeks?

Thanks :/ :)

I don't think u understand what I'm asking.

If i have $7000 Australian dollars then wen I arrive in Europe it converts to APPROX 5500euros. Am I losing money when I convert or is it basically the same only different currencies ?

They are different currencies. You are not 'losing money'...what's important is what you can buy with those euros.

If you take $7000 Aus to Vietnam you will have 150 million dong.

That doesn't mean you have become a real millionaire (not in dollars anyway ;-)

Indeed cost of living is an important factor too - a McDonalds meal that costs $7 in Australia (just guessing), doesn't necessarily cost €5.50 in Europe but may in fact cost €7 or more.

Also keep in mind that even among countries using the same euro there are considerable differences: Portugal, for example, is overall considerably cheaper than France.

It seems that you need to take a currency vs. cost 101 course Aussiesisters.

Simply put:
7000 AUD buys you 5400 E
7000 AUD buys you 1000 Mickey D meals in Australia
5400 E buys you 770 Mickey D meals in Europe.

So 7000 AUD equals 5400 E in currency value but NOT in buying value.
