Banking in Mongolia

Hello, I will be travelling for a while in south-east Asia before travelling to Mongolia.I anticipate Mongolia will be more expensive so I'm wondering about the best way to handle my money. Are ATMs reliable and do they allow for multiple withdrawals (I don't expect to find much outside of UB)? Traveller's cheques (do people still use them?)? I know cash would be best but I don't want to carry my whole stash for that long. Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

You might check with your bank. Your own bank's daily maximum withdrawal is more likely to bis the limitation than the ATM in UB.

You might take try to obtain Euros or USD in SEAsia just before coming to Mongolia.

Just how much money do you anticipate needing?

Thanks for your response, Ruth. As for how much money I need, I an struggling a bit to figure it out. Tours seem expensive, and I would like to be able to join others to cut costs, but at the moment I'm not really sure what to expect. If you have any thoughts I would really appreciate hearing them.

When are you expecting to be in Mongolia? If it is between June and August, then you have a better chance of finding fellow travelers. With fellow travelers, your costs for tours should run about 60 USD per day (last summer's range was probably 45-75 USD per day and to some degree that number depends upon what is included - meals, guide, driver, gas, accommodations, etc).

Look at tours from the various guesthouses such as Golden Gobi.

Thanks again for your very helpful response. Is there anyone you would recommend in particular for camel trekking?
