Trip report

I have just spent three weeks in Belize covering most of the main towns.
It is easier to post the link to my blog as it has photos
Belize has its charms but it is also a troubled country. The Cayes are quite different from the rest.

Interesting report. I had to cancel a planned trip to Belize a couple of days ago. I wanted to visit again....last timeI was there was in 2002....but it seems that many things have changed, not for the better. I'm planning to go later on, though.

Very different from my impression too.

Sure,it has its problems (like every country..I had to laugh over the comparison with Mexico.Obviously the OP hasn't seen the slums there,or the murder rate)...but the casual tourist will not really see or be affected by any of that stuff.

Hello Andrew,
Thanks for the report...a slightly different take but none the less interesting. Wasn't it Belize that appropriated Lord Ashcroft's assets? Also note that there was a movie that was partially filmed in Belize called "The Mosquito Coast that starred Harrison Ford and an much younger Helen Mirren. I doubt if there will be a war but the border with Guatemala will continue to be infitrated by bad guys. Right now there is a major drug cartel operating out of the Peten. Neither country likes to see toursim impacted but there must be a ton of drug money involed.

My experiances and perception of the countries are quite different than yours. I did enjoy your trip report and seeing the countries through anothers perspective.

The murder rate in Mexico is half that of Belize

"The murder rate in Mexico is half that of Belize " True but irrelevant in a travel forum. Crime against tourists is virtually nonexist in Belize. Belize does not have a hurricane problem. Glass is half empty type arent you?.

"If there is a war..." ...in which alternate reality would this occur? Sounds like someone didn't follow the second rule on the door.

I was in Belize last January. I concur. Belize is troubled, and has problems as well. I recently told my travel agent off about this. WHY DIDNT HE TELL ME?

Most travel agents have not a clue what a Belize is. Most doctors are equally clueless about tropical infections and disease.

your travel agent probably figured you would know there are developing country problems in developing countries, thats why they are called deveoping countries not developed.
