Hey

Does anybody know if the Vistadome train need's to be booked in advance (weeks etc..) or can it be booked when I arrive in Cusco in May?

Cheers :0)

Can't specifically say about the Vistadome (we took the cheap train), but we booked our train tix with no problems early May last year about 6 days in advance when we arrived in Cusco. We also purchased our MP tix in Cusco with no problems.

Regards,
Bob

It's impossible to say - in the high season it's pretty common that trains get fully booked quite a bit in advance. The Vistadome tends to leave at the more convenient times so is more popular.

Ok,so maybe it would be wise to book. I won't be there until May.

Book it in advance to be sure, May isn't high season yet but prevention is better than cure.

I booked mine in advance because I got a sneaking suspicion that May is getting more and more popular. Some trains were already booked up.

Can you book trains at hostels and hotels...? Or only at the train station...?

I'm not sure about the hostels, but you don't have to go to the train station for tix. They have an office right on the Plaza de Armas in Cusco.

Book it before you go. Couple years ago we arrived in Cusco on a Sunday in Late May and could not get train tickets until Friday.
Last year we got our tickets before we left US and got tickets on Vistadome going to MP but could only get tickets on Backpacker coming back to Ollantaytambo.

I believe trains are only running up to Ollantaytambo. Due to the damage to the tracks over the last few wet seasons I don't think they are running services from Poroy during the wet season.

OIlantaytambo is best anyway as it's then quicker to go by road back to Cusco.

When you get off the train at ollantaytambo, there will be several places on your right as you walk toward town where you can catch a combi back to Cusco--we paid $4 each for 9 passengers on our van. Delivered us to a park about two blocks from Center of Cusco. Driver said he was not allowed to drive us to individual hotels, but no problem as everything is fairly close.
