Varadero: from the airport to HavanaHi, we'll be arriving at 8:30 pm at Varadero airport and we'll have 2 options: preferred option is to find economical transport to Havana that evening, or even better, to Santa Maria del mar, but we are afraid that taxis will kill us; alternatively we'll take a taxi to a casa in Matanzas and the next day take the Viazul bus to Havana and then on to the beaches. Could someone please give us an idea of prices for both options, as well as departure time of the bus? Thank you.

1There is no scheduled economical options from Varadero Airport to Havana at that time of night, the last Viazul Bus departs at 6:30pm.
A taxi to Matanzas + casa/meal in Matanzas + Viazul to Havana + taxi to Santa Maria del Mar will be more expensive and way more hassle than simply biting the bullet and taking a taxi direct from the airport to Santa Maria del Mar when you arrive.
Why don't you ask your Santa Maria del Mar casa owner what he/she can arrange for an airport pick-up?

2OK Terry, what is the cost of a taxi to Matanzas? and an estimate of the cost to Santa Maria? do you know what time the bus leaves from Matanzas?

3Varadero Airport to Matanzas about 20 CUC. Varadero Airport to Santa Maria del Mar about 90 CUC easily negotiated much lower in conjunction with your casa stay.
I rarely take the bus between Varadaro and Havana anymore so I don't know how the bus works with Matanzas passengers, but there is no scheduled Viazul bus stop in Matanzas as far as I remember. Maybe that has changed or maybe it's a simple flag-down from some designated spot, perhaps someone else here knows. Check out schedules here: http://www.viazul.com/
Have you asked your casa owner about an airport pick-up?

4Your only hope is that there is a bus picking up passengers for Havana from your plane. If so, it will cost you approximately CUC$25 each for the trip.
Failing that, you will have to cab it or spend the night somewhere close.

5And even if you're lucky enough to find that bus for 20-25CUC each that cost plus a Havana casa plus a taxi the next day out to Santa Maria del Mar is still more expensive and a lot more hassle than arranging a direct airport pick-up from your casa owner...

7That resort caters to low end package tourists, many of which are bused from Varadero.
Contact the resort directly. You might get lucky and they're picking up other guests on your flight. That would solve all your troubles.

8Jocelynb – by the time you finish in the airport and get some CUC it will be closer to 9 or 9.30pm. They have you over the barrel at the airport and this is one of those times you have to bit the bullet and pay to get out of the airport. The official rate is $90 but that late at night I don’t know if they are willing to negotiate so based on 2 people that’s $40 or 45 per person. I always find that the sooner I get to my destination the better.
