good cup of coffee?
one of the disappoints of traveling in south america has been the lack of a good cup of coffee to start the day. plenty of good coffee grown and exported but much of the local servings have been nescafe instant or worsewondering if anyone has suggestions for places in quito and/or cuenca that serve good coffee? probably searching for french pressed would be really pushing my luck, huh?

There are a few good places in Quito that serve the real stuff and it is very nice.... I know how to get to them but can't remember the names of the streets or the cafes/restaurants where I had them. My other half didn't mind the coffee in Uncle Ho's though and he has had several cups there so it can't be that bad. We've also had some very good coffee in a couple of places in the colonial part of Quito in and around Plaza Grande...

I hear ya, I've suffered through lousy coffee in SA. Magic Bean has good coffee but its not cheap. There was a good cafe along Amazonas near the Hilton that had good coffee and a great patio. THere is also a chain (forget its name) of cafes that had decent coffee. One outlet is just to the north of Plaza Foch.5
I used to go to a bakery that served good coffee. Their rolls and buns were good too. Can't remember the name or address, except that it was on Venezuela in Old Quito.I agree, it's an irony that you can't get decent coffee in countries that are some of the main producers. Imagine, that you wouldn't be able to buy good wine in Spain or Italy.

Since we're on the topic of coffee in south America. Can anyone recommend a brand of coffe commonly sold at supermarkets down here? Oddly enough I've see a Hatian brand. I'm in Chile now and will be in Argentina and other countries. I'm trying to avoid buying a whole bag of crap coffee.Nescafé = heartburn
