17The bats leave at different times. anywhere from 7PM to 9:30PM. The best time to view them is actually mid July to mid August. There are more of them because they have had their pups. It is usually drier then and fewer bugs so they need more time to feed. Also the days are longer then so they usually come out in daylight which improves viewing. If you are thinking of a picnic near the bridge I would not advise being too close. The bats live under the bridge and the smell can be intense.

20One of the coolest that is easy to get into (that is, no long lines like at Guerro's) is Ruby's Bar-b-que (on 29th Street, near Guadalupe and 29th). Food is reasonably priced (they have black bean tacos with bbq sauce that are out of this word for the vegetarians in any party). If you like natural beef Texas bar-b-que. ;Numerous autographs from musicians (and others) on the walls and under the tabletop covers. Eat inside or out on the patio. This is not to be confused with a local chain bbq group called Rudy's. Eating at Ruby's is a real Austin experience. Wait staff, owners, the whole scene is Austin.
For pizza, and the al fresco style meal mentioned before, I'd go for an Eastside Pizza (l rather like the plain ones but they have all kinds), The tend to be a thin and crispy pizza. There are about three locations now in Austin). Take the pizza to UT campus and eat at the Littlefield Fountain (on 21st Street, the UT Tower, sans sniper is in the distance). I love that fountain (I guess a drive-by to see if it is on before dinner might be in order). Those are some real suggestions from someone who lives in Austin and is willing to actually make suggestions.

22I just sent this info to a friend here in Dallas that has never been to Austin and was looking for some suggestions for places to go eat and things to do...not sure if you are still needing this, but thought I would post it anyway.
If you are looking for BBQ and are willing to take a great 20 minute drive out in the Hill Country (Driftwood to be exact) I would suggest The Salt Lick; almost every foodie and food television program has been there and loved it, but go hungry...it is family style service and the way is worth it. For Tex-Mex, I would recommend Guerro's on SoCo also (right across the street from HomeSlice) they have awesome margaritas, breakfast tacos and just about everything else on the menu...some nights have live music too. Although, almost everywhere in Austin that is big enough to fit 5 people has music...lol!
For good Southern Homestyle cooking, go to Threadgill's on Barton Springs and Riverside, the food is amazing and will make you wanna lick your plate. Everything is good, but the banana pudding is amazing. If you go there for lunch, you could easily get to Barton Springs Pool and Zilker Park for a really great walk or swim, there is canoeing and kayaking on Town Lake not too far away. Don't forget to visit the Congress Ave Bridge to watch the bats at sunset, won't see anything like that anywhere else in the world!
Oooh, I almost forgot...if you like to shop, you definitely need to go to the store Uncommon Objects (make sure you have plenty of time, LOTS of things to see), it is also on SoCo....sensing a trend here? lol There is lots of good shopping and things to do (and eat) right in that small area.
If you wanna take in a bit of history, there is also the Bob Bullock State History Museum and the LBJ Library right on or near the UT Campus, which is a great place to walk and also has some shops on the main drag Guadalupe.
I hope I haven't rambled on too much or overwhelmed you with my ideas....sorry, I just love Austin and all the things that there are to do there.
