Backpacking in the Caribbean

Hey Guys

I am planning on travelling around the Caribbean for about 2-3 month. My plans are either travelling from june to september 2013 or jan to march 2014.

Anybody who has experience with travelling around the Caribbean?
Where should i go? I am on a budget!
And how do i get around? is it possible with ferry's or do i have to take planes???

Looking forward to your response!

A traveler from Denmark!

Kristian

Hi Kristian, I would recommend Jan-March to have more fun. From June to September it gets hotter and hotter and becomes very quiet with many businesses closed as the season is Nov til April. I think my favourite place The Grenadines fits your bill, there are 32 islands and cays between St Lucia and Grenada, most of which you can do by ferry. Its a popular destination for Scandinavians and I don't think you would need to go anywhere else in that time frame.

Of course all is possible if you have lots of money. I guess it depends on whether you want to do a whistlestop tour of places of interest or you want to visit with the people and get a feel for their culture. I find the international flights pricy and the inter island flights are expensive too which would make taking ferries a much cheaper option when available but these don't run every day so you need to plan. From my experience early on you find somewhere you want to stay longer and the itinerary goes out of the window. I had Danish friends who did that, their first stop was Bequia where an uncle lived and they spent 90% of their trip there in the end. Island prices vary greatly as do accomodations so you need to prebook something you can comfortably afford for a few weeks while you source local cheaper accomodation. I suppose you google fb and do trip advisor to get as much info as possible, but my money is still on St Vincent and the Grenadines. Good luck
