My girlfriend, a Colombian citizen, needs a single entry tourist visa for Ethiopia.
Problem is we are in Malawi and there is no Ethiopian diplomatic mission here. The closest one is in South Africa but she also needs a visa for that country.
Visas on arrival are not available to citizens of Colombia as far as I know.
Any ideas on what we should do???

1Check with the consulate in South Africa if you can maybe send the visa application and passport via messenger (DHL, FEDEX etc) to them. Forget about emailing them, call!
My Colombian wife got her visa for Ethiopia in Berlin even though she is not a resident in Germany. I am telling you this because we could not find any information whether this would be possible beforehand. They were very friendly with us. Understanding the difficulty you are facing I will forward your message to a friend who works for the Ethiopian diplomatic service, maybe I can get an answer for you.

2Check here http://www.ethioembassy.org.uk/consular_services/visa.htm
This is from the excellent website of Eth Embassy in UK.
It clearly states that people coming from a country with no Ethiopian Embassy/Mission CAN get tourist visa at Addis Airport.
Suggest you find it. Print it and take with you / her....

3the text of the Eth Emb in UK further states:
Foreign nationals who are coming from countries that are not listed as tourist generating countries and from those countries that do not have an agreement with Ethiopia regarding the issuance of visas on arrival, can enter Ethiopia by obtaining a visa from a nearby Ethiopian Mission. However, if tourists from such countries wish to get a visa on arrival at the airport, they are required to get approval from the Immigration and Nationality Affairs Main Department in Ethiopia. Requests for such approval can be sent to:
Main Department for Immigration and Nationality Affairs, PO Box 3741, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Fax: 002511 55 32 09 / 002511 56 49 81
I suggest you give these people a call. You can try to email but don't expect an answer.

Thansk for your replies and kind assistance. I apologise for not replying earlier, but for some reason my watch update didn't send me any news until Jonas' latest response.
Jonas, your contact info is very useful, and should be a good resource for future inquirers on this matter. Thanks!
As I write this, we have just arrived in Addis Ababa today. We went to the local Ethiopian Airlines office in Malawi and asked the desk agent if they could organise a visa for us (since we were buying the flight from them). She said no. I happened to speak to her manager, and he also said no. Then, I managed to get in touch with the Station Manager and his words exactly "Yes of course we organise visas for our customers. There's been a communication breakdown - my staff gave you the wrong information." So there you go.
We bought the ticket on the word of ET and they sent a communique to the Ministry of Immigration to arrange a visa. They then forwarded us an email three days ago saying it had been confirmed. We needed to bring that email with us to the Visa on Arrival Desk at Bole Airport, and they issued the visa no problem.
However, before we showed them the letter, a woman at the desk who appeared to be the supervising officer, said "You're Colombian? No visa on arrival for you."
Hope this helps. Thanks again!
