Day safari for large group...does such a thing exist?

We are a group of about 30 people with a day to spare who want to get a taste of the African wildlife and bush..there are some game parks around the Jo'burg area but I'm wondering if there are places that will accommodate our group for a day, and what the costs would be per person for such a large group?

Everywhere I have looked lists prices of at least 1750 rand, which is about $200 CAD, why are day safaris this expensive? I would expect it to be similar to a zoo, except you're driven around and maybe there's a meal.

Also if it's easier, we will have some free days in Cape Town as well..we just want to do a safari while we're in S. Africa!

Similar to a zoo? Well, some of the parks around Cape Town have that kind of a reputation. But if you go on safari in the Kruger area it's nothing like a zoo, it's fantastic!

If you go to a private reserve what you Get for your money is:

  • Two game drives a day in an open jeep with a professional tracker and guide
  • Breakfast, lunch and usually a 3 course dinner
  • Snacks and drinks on the game drives
  • Luxury accommodation

I would think that with such a large group there shouldn't be a problem getting a booking company like Siyabona.com to arrange safari in Kruger with driver/guide or rent a whole lodge for a night. National Parks Are a lot cheaper than private reserves, less luxury but you get the same fantastic safari experience.

There will no doubt be ways to make it cheaper - you are looking at a package ex Jo'berg.

Can you get yourselves to, for example, Pilanesberg - eg hire a coach? Once there you can do a "group" game drive in a 25 seater vehicle for R350 pp. However, the drives are early morning or late afternoon so you'd need to factor that into your planning. Perhaps a lunch en route, game drive and late arrival back in Jo'berg?
