December between Reading and Brecon

I'm going to have a week in mid-December in Reading, Brecon or somewhere in between (staying with friends who split their time between these two places). Cardiff will be on the to-do list, but any other suggestions of things to do at that wintery time of year in either location or other places nearby? We'll have a car.

Second attempt at posting after the site ate my first one:

Brecon is undoubtedly a nicer place to stay than Reading.

However, places you could visit easily from Reading include: Oxford; Winchester; and Windsor (perhaps combining it with Eton); all of which have indoor sights high on most people's lists and could be a full day's outing each.

Other than that, what kind of things do you like to do or see? The Museum of English Rural Life in Reading is interesting for an hour or two (but probably wouldn't appeal to everyone). A lot of local stately homes will be closed in December, but some have special pre-Christmas opening and probably activities (e.g. Basildon Park).

Bristol, Bath, Hereford and Gloucester all have their merits.
Try to get to Caerphilly castle when you are in Cardiff.

Chepstow Castle, Tintern Abbey, Hay on Wye (especially if you are in to books!).

So many castles in the area. Raglan being another outstanding one.
Interesting market towns of Abergavenny and Monmouth. Pretty villages of Skenfrith and Grosmont (both have small castles).
Llanthony Priory, but not for the faint hearted to get to if you are claustrophobic. Very narrow lane.

Forgot about Llanthony, it is very picturesque. As is the drive from there over Gospel Pass to Hay on Wye.

Well you now have about a months worth of suggestions!

Over to you..........

Brilliant! Thanks everyone. The castles, books and general interesting drives all sound like winners. That should definitely keep us busy...
