First time travelling in South East AsiaHi there,
I just joined Lonely Planet, I am looking to travel to Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos etc in March with the purpose of developing a documentary photography/film portfolio. I have never been to these places before, and have no point of contact/reference there. I would like to get some advice about the safety of travelling to these places alone. If there are other people during March that will be doing the same thing, I hopefully look for a travel partner. I have no set itinerary, and I am open to make plans as they come along. I have been in touch with a few NGOs that I would like to visit in order to do some photography volunteering during my trip as well.

1If I read this correctly, you would like to visit Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand and Laos in one month. Most people would spend a month in each of these places and only see the highlights. As it is your first time to SEA, then I would suggest you fly into Bangkok, Thailand. Then head north Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai etc with nature and Hill Tribes etc, then maybe back down for a side trip to Cambodia for Angkor Wat. But really, your itinerary would be determined by your interest or your angle of your documentary ie nature, culture, city life or remote village life etc.
Regarding safety, as long as you observe the same common sense things that you do in your home town, then you will be OK.

2Have to agree. Thailand and VN in particular can easily eat up a month and you will staill want more.
Secondly SE Asia is not just about the sights, the ambience and street activities are just as interesting
And yes, travel is generally regarded as safe in SE Asia.

7I was lured into a situation where my pocket was picked. I had been hassled by the receptionist at my GH for coming back 'home' so early two nights in a row. He thought I should be out there 'having fun'. Then one night I got into drinking quite a few beers with an Aussie dude who happened to be a fan of the same football player as I held high. On my way 'home' it happened.
The thought occured to me that the receptionist had come to think that I was a fat target for a robbery and was somehow involved. For a bit it seemed plausible but then again probably not.

8I will also be going to southeast asia for my first time travelling alone. Let me know if you ever want to meet. I will be startingin Thailand. The bombing insurgence seems to be in the South so I might just steer clear from there for a while. I am planning to go to Koh Samui and Koh Tao and don't think the insurgence will make sch a huge impact.
