accommodation prices

I'll be heading to Sri Lanka in about 3 weeks. I'll be going on my tod and am a little concerned about the prices I'm likely to encounter for a room.

It's the start of a year long trip, so I'm looking for budget rooms and dormitories. In most of South East Asia, it's possible to find accommodation for about a fiver a night, or about 6 euros/8 dollars (all approximate).

I get the impression that Sri Lanka is probably going to be more expensive. Can anyone suggest places to stay that fit my criteria? I realise that I'll be paying more, but I'd certainly like to keep the costs down where possible.

Thanks in advance.

Hi mate,

There are plenty of home stay type accommodation in Colombo, in fact it is about 15km away 30minutes drive from the main Colombo city, the area is "Mount Lavinia" where most of popular tourists hotels are based, I stayed there few times when I visited Sri Lanka, it is really a homely atmosphere, I paid for the room only USD15 per night, the rooms were clean.

Can recommend that place,

Good luck!

Well it depends how strict your budget is. There are plenty of cheaper places but they are not always convenient or nice
I was travelling on my own but my budget was a little more - aiming to spend 1000 to 2000 LKR per night (8 to 16 dollars)
Recommended are
Richards son guesthouse in Hikkaduwa. 1500R
Weltevreden hotel Galle 1700
Olde empire hotel kandy 1500 with shared bath
I also stayed at some so so or grungy kind of hotels including
Royal top Haputale 900 with shared bath
Sun ray hotel dambulla 1500

Most places you could find cheaper guesthouses or home stays than this, not listed in any guidebook but they tend to suffer from noise, mosquitos or didn't have a nice view etc
Good luck with the trip and don't worry too much about the LP's expensive listings

Red Heart, Hikkaduwa (opposite Ranjeeth's Beach Bar) 1000Rs - basic but own bathroom etc
South Ceylon, Unawatuna 15000Rs - nice nice nice. HW etc
Kandy we found quite a few for 1500R and own bathroom.

Where are you planning to visit - you'll get better answers that way.

Thanks everyone. Keep 'em coming.

I'm not precisely sure where I'm going exactly though. I tend to take one day at a time, and just go with the flow.
