China VPN

Can anyone recommend a VPN that works in China?

Either free or just a one month paid period

I was recommended Astrill but you can only purchase a 3 months policy and I am only in China for a month.

Not a good topic for discussion on an open forum. I'm sure not going to tell you what works for me since I'm still in China and don't want my access to be shut down.

I will say, however, that if you are only willing to pay for one month of service, you are not likely to find one offering such a short term, and will instead need to use one which is free.

Also, you need to set it up before you arrive here.

#1, does it really work like that??? Asking sincerely as I am curious. Do you really think that responding to this thread would attract the attention of the authorities and shut down your access? Is that common? I've had the same question myself, though I doubt there are any clear answers. Another reason why it's a shame we have lost PM capabilities. I have a few friends on FB who seem actively taunt/flaunt their connection and I've always wondered if they're asking for trouble.

Also, is it really true that you must set it up before you leave? Can't you get one in-country?

I've also heard that VPNs are not working as well lately... #2 do you have confirmation that 4gwip is working recently?

One more question, I just saw on the Astrill site that the "China" server says "No Facebook". Does that mean that even with a VPN you can't access it within the country, OR that only people using the China server VPN can't access it?

Wish there were a way to get private answers to these...

oh Chinese authorities know very well all sites which offer VPN and always try to impede them, but it's a game of cat and mouse

I used witopia pro plan and it worked, I set it up when i was already in china (using instructions via e-mail). unfortunately it offers only long term plans but try any other, even French le VPN as they all should use the same technologies

True for services like Astrill or only for website-based ones like 4gwip?

Astrill claims that they have had no probs with their service recently...

So I am currently in Beijing and am using facebook successfully. I am going to share the method that works for me right now even though "I'm still in China and don't want my access to be shut down." I can respect the fact that people do not want to share but why post about not wanting to share.

The method I am using entails changing the host file on your computer. If you just google "china host file facebook" you will find more information. I am not the most computer savy guy and figured out how to do it. Keep in mind the method entails changing the host file on your computer. Google how to change your host file and this is my setup. You just have to copy and paste it into your host file. Keep in mind that if you change the file you can easily change it back. And if you add something to the file IE google and your google access in China stops working, simply delete the string that is for google. I hope this helps someone out there. I have found dozens of different host file mods you can do to access different websites IE dropbox, youtube, twitter that also work. If there is any interest out there I will try to update the host file.

So here is the facebook host file mod. Keep in mind after you paste this string in you have to make sure every url you enter starts with https:// Just add it in and it works.
