Travel companions and tips Mongolia (May)

Hi everyone,

This May i'll be in Mongolia for some more than three weeks. The exact date is not yet known.
I'm wondering if there is anyone interested in traveling together, or meet somewhere to travel together for a few days.

I'll arrive in UB and from there I want to travel trough the country, I didn't decided which places I really want to see, so if somebody has good ideas i would love to hear from you.
Of course I have some things in mind, but nothing is sure yet.

I will take a flight from Holland to Moscow and from there i'll take the train to UB.
Is there somebody who can tell me what the costs are if you buy a train ticket at the stations themselves, in Russia? I was wondering if it is cheaper to buy the tickets over there or to buy them before(now in Holland?. And also if it is cheaper, will it take a lot of time and energy to arrange it in Russia?

Would love to hear from you,

Loren

There aren't that many trains which travel from Moscow to Ulan Bator. In fact, I am pretty sure that there are only two per week. One stops in UB and the other continues on to Beijing. BUT there are multiple other possibilities if you plan to take shorter hops. You can't buy a ticket Moscow to Mongolia and hop on and off.

It is impossible to buy tickets for the international trains from Russia to Mongolia online yourself. Your options are to wait until you arrive in Russia or to use an agency which will charge a 30+% mark up or to take shorter hops which you can buy online yourself beginning 45 days prior to departure and buy the last segment from Russia to Mongolia on arrival or to travel from Russia to Mongolia via bus from Ulan Ude to Ulan Bator.

I often recommend the latter because it takes less time (12 hours compared to same train journey which is 24 hours) and cost is same or cheaper. Bus tickets can often be arranged in advance through UU based hostel or travel agency for minimal mark up.
