Diving in South-East Asia

Hi everyone!

I'll be travelling in South-East Asia for 3 months as from the 27th of march. I'll be visiting Indonesia (1 month, probably only Java, Bali, Lombok and Komodo) and then Thailand, Laos and Vietnam (2 months).

On this trip I would very much like to do some diving somewhere.
I have never dived before and I was wandering if someone could recommend me the best place to do this in one of the countries I've mentioned.

I have read some nice things about the Kurimunjawa-islands near Semarang. And also about the Gili Islands.
Or is there a better place to do this in Thailand / ..

Any advice? Thanks in advance!

Yannick, Belgium

Ko Tao in Thailand is reputed as one of the better and cheaper places to get a PADI certificate, so thats a good place to start. The Gili islands also have good diving, and once you've got some experience, diving around Komodo island is terrific.

I second Ko Tao, it is where I got my PADI years back, and is a fantastic place for diving. There are plenty of dive operations in competition with each other too. And yes, the Gili's are great too. Never dove in Semarang so can't comment on that.

since you will be visiting Indonesia first, better get your license in Indonesia.
You will find good PADI operator in Bali and the Gilis

Agreed, Gilis is very well set up for Padi courses.

Thanks for all the replies everyone!

I'll probably get my padi course on the Gili's then. And try to dive at Komodo Island afterwards.

Can anyone tell me what the normal price should be for a padi course? Can anyone recommend an operator on the Gili's?

There are many, many choices on Gili T, just stroll the beachfront, go in and talk to them, compare prices, and choose the one you feel most comfortable with. A very approximate guess would be about US$300-350 for a full PADI course, but you can check their websites online for a better idea.
