China Visa Requirement - Hong Kong R/T flight acceptable?
I will apply for a China visa at the consulate in Los Angeles.Will they accept a round trip flight to Hong Kong and a reservation in a Shenzhen motel?
Or will they only accept a flight into China proper?

Make the mainland hotel reservations and submit them with your visa application like the China consulate's website says. The person who answered the phone when you called may not be the person making the decisions on the day your paperwork hits their desk.Like @Drumbrake says above, you can cancel the reservations you don't actually need after your visa has been issued.
