Yes, I am aware of it. There was a article published about it in the journal Science in late 2011. Novartis and the other researchers knew that the drug worked, they just didn't know why. The Australians figured out the ode of action, which not only provides info on how to best use the drug, but also gives clues for developing new drugs.Novartis press release on the Science article.
The drug in question doesn't have a brand name yet; it's known as NITD609. It is currently being looked at for treatment, not prevention of malaria.
The researchers involved specialize in studying the biology of malaria parasites, with a view toward figuring out how to kill them.
