Land travel across FloresWe visited Java/Bali and Lombok in 2010 and would like to go back to visit Sulawesi/Flores/Komodo/Rinca. We didn't choose Flores in 2010 because when I asked at the time overland travel across Flores was a bit pricey/tricky.
Just wondering if this is still the case. Ideally we'd love to fly into Maumere and then travel via Kelimutu and Riung to Labuan Bajo. Then continue onto Lombok via Perama boat. Is the over land travel across Flores still slow going and expensive? Or are there more options for shared cars these days? I realize not much may have changed in a short 3 years but I thought I'd ask. If we make it to Flores it'd be a shame to have to miss some of the other highlights of the island and just fly into LB instead.

Roads on Flores, yes slow going.
How can a bus be expensive !

4AS above....local bus travel is very cheap. Its slow though, and only goes on the larger roads...if you want to stay on the main Maumere-Moni.Bajawa-Ruteng-Labuan Bajo track, and you have the time, then no problem.
Alternative is own car and driver..that will cost more for sure (maybe IR500,000-600,000 a day).
Expensive for Indonesians, not so much in for dollar/euro earners ;-)
Anyway..that will give you the chance to go where you want, get off the main road, visit small villages etc.......

5If you are afraid of taking the winding roads you could always just fly into Maumere and do a one or two day trip to Kelimutu, then backtrack to Maumere and fly Maumere to LB...It will save you a couple of days and the worst of the road and long distances between towns. I know it's a shame to backtrack, but if you alternative is not to go at all, I would do Maumere to Kelimutu and the villages in between.

6Thanks that gives me a starting point for things to consider. I suppose we'd want to take a week between Maumere and LB but sounds like that might be pushing it if we go the bus route. I like the idea of hiring a private car/driver so that we can stop off whenever we want to but are English speaking drivers common on Flores? Not that we need him/her to speak English to drive us but it might be nice to communicate with the person during those hours on the road and learn more about the areas we drive through.

8Dino Lopez, Stefanus Jedarus and Augustinus are local Florenese drivers AND tourguides who are fluent in English. Augustinus is my preferred driver for many years when I am vacationing in Flores. Stefanus I met last November in LB. Dino I know by reputation and is highly recommended by Augustinus and on TT. PM me if you need their contact details.

9e441993, I too would like the contact details for the Flores drivers, especially Agustinus. However, your PM function seems to be turned off. Could you PM me with the info. Knowing in which towns they are based would be helpful too. We are planning a cross Flores drive starting in Maumere going to LB, but the opposite direction is also being considered. It will depend on how the rest of the trip shakes out. Thanks
