Mad Tourist Disease
I finally got tired of answering the same old questions about mosquito-borne diseases in SEA, so I wrote it up here . The editor wanted a one-week exclusive but when that expires, I'll put the text either into this post or make a new one.3
I agree about the doxycycline. I have had to take it for an infection (nothing to do with travel). It was effective for my complaint but the side effects are unpleasant; tinnitus, irritability and slight stomach pains to name just three. And you are advised to keep out of direct daylight. Not easy in VN, Laos and the rest of SE Asia.
DEET up certainly. Chances are you will still get the occasional bite, especially us pale skinned Celtic types but, in over 200 days in SE Asia, the most I have had is an annoying itch.

Hey Bassalegboy, I'm a shocking speller/typer, but if you're in a position to upgrade to Internet Explorer 10, then it has a built in, live time, spell checker, although it wouldn't have picked up your intention to put "sunlight" instead of daylight. Handy for typing all things on the net, including emails.
