Irkutsk or Ulan Ude for Ulaanbaator bus

Hi, I am doing the Trans-Mongolian railway in May and wondering if it is worth going to Ulan Ude after Irkutsk and Okhron Is. Is there much to see there (apart from the Lenin head) and is it easier/ quicker to get a bus to Ulaanbaator from Irkutsk or Ulan Ude?

of course it's easier as there are plenty of buses shuttling bw Ulan Ude and Ulaanbaator. some of the companies provide tickets online.

imho there is much to see in Ulan Ude and Buryatia, make at least basic research

So it's quicker to get to UB from Ulan Ude than Irkutsk?

Is there much to see there

neither Irkutsk, Ulan Ude (or Severobaikalsk) has that much to see, You should regard it as a base to see the region. Outside Ulan Ude you can see Datsans, Old Believer villages and the eastern shore of Lake Baikal.

The bus to UB originates in Ulan Ude so if you intend to take the bus, you have little choice but to go to UU. As the bus from UU takes about half the time as the train from UU you can see something of the city and still spend the same travel time.

Alternatively, you can see if the schedule for the boat across Lake Baikal fits your schedule and travel across the lake instead of along the shore.

Thanks, yes, I am hoping to go out to the island but just staying in Irkutsk overnight. Cheers for the boat tip, Ruth, sounds like a more scenic way to get there:)
