Across Zanskar
hello, Im wondering what impact the new road or roads has had on the across Zanskar trek. Im not likely going to be doing it this year but If my plans fall through I might. If anyone has done it recently any feedback appreciated. Also, how much would you budget to do it per day. Regards>>>>1
Here is a somewhat recent LP thread that describes the current state of the ongoing road construction in Zanskar.http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/thread.jspa?threadID=2230794
Regarding daily costs, this will depend on a number of factors, such as whether you hire a horseman and animal to carry your gear and how much gear you buy in India for the trek. I did my trek into Zanskar without any support (no horseman, etc.) and it was the first week in June, before any teahouses were open. The homestays at that time were all less than 500 rupees a night and I only saw one other non-local trekker during the entire walk. For me, the cost of the trek was really no more than what my daily cost is when I am not trekking. The trek was actually a money saver for me, as at the time I went, the only transport from Keylong to Leh was by jeep for about 2,000 rupees, because the busses were not yet running.
