10 days in yucatan in june
Hi,My boyfriend and i are planning a trip to yucatan at the beginning of june. We're thinking of starting out in merida, spending 2 nights there, then heading to tulum via chichen itza, then spending 5 nights in tulum relaxing, visiting cenotes and ruins. He's interested in seeing the over the topness of cancun and wants to take some photos of the architecture there, but not actually have a holiday there, so we'll just spend 2 nights there before flying back to mexico city from cancun.
If we leave merida very early in the morning to go straight to chichen itza, visit the ruins and ik-kil cenote, is there a way to then get straight to tulum? ADO seem to run a service merida to chichen itza but there isn't one chichen itza to tulum.
Also, we'd obviously have all our stuff with us, so are the storage lockers at chichen itza (and at the cenote maybe) ok for storing luggage?
Does anyone have any experience with very last minute accommodation in cancun? We're not really fussed about where we stay as tulum is the main treat for us, so would like to find a last minute deal somewhere considering it's low-ish season.
Thanks in advance!

I cant help with cenote advice or Cancun since I rarely go to either. ADO has a daily departure from Chichen to Tulum at 430 PM. You can store you things at Chichen Itza but have no idea about the cenote. The bus schedule is here.

We did a trip similar to yours last year, but only eight days. Flew into Cancun, then out to Chichen Itza, Mayapan, Labna, Sayil, Loltun Caves and Uxmal. A couple overnights along the way. Then into Merida for a day, and then drove east to the Dzipnup Cenote, Coba and Tulum. Ended up in Playa del Carmen at a condo hotel right on the beach. Pretty amazing. email me at rickhowe@aol.com. I wrote it up and have pics and tips.3
It sounds like you are taking the bus to Chizen Itza from Mérida. If so, why not take the bus from Mérida to Valladolid, spend the night there and take a tour to Chitzen Itza from Valladolid while visiting local cenotes, then take the bus from Valladolid to Tutlum. Not sure what "architecture" your bf expects to photograph in Cancun other than modern kitch.

Sounds ok but I wouldnt want the tour to Chichen. But then, I dont do tours. Agree about the architecture in Cancun. I cant imagine anything noteworthy in Cancun.5
Have to disagree with #4's advice on Chitzen Itza. If you haven't been to Mayan ruins before, Chitzen Itza is one of the best preserved and most accessible ruins around and anyone with interest in Mayan culture should see it at least once. Experienced Yucatan travellers don't like it because it has become so crowded with tourists, but the ball court and extensively restored site in general is excellent. To balance out the touristy Chitzen Itza you could also go to Ek Balam outside of Valladolid for a more tranquil visit to Mayan ruins.6
Agree, you ought to consider staying one night in Valladolid, stopping at Chichen Itza on the trip from Merida.7
Chichen Itza does have a storage room but if you leave things make sure the are well locked up as my back pack was opened and things taken some years back. I didnt notice it till I reached Merida that evening. I went back the next year again and complained. I love this site and trt to visit it every couple of years. Just so much to see you cannnot get it all in in one visit.. I usually try to visit Chichen Itza as I go up to Merida and plan always to arrive early in am when it isnt that hot. Take hats, water and sun screen. It will be HOT. Leave on a bus for Cancun and then change if necessary for one on to Tulum Pueblo. Only pay only from one stop to another do not try to buy thru tickets as it usually does not work and you will be forced to pay again. my photos of Chichen Itza on wolfcalls.com8
¨Have to disagree with #4's advice on Chitzen Itza.¨What advice on Chichen Itza? I said I wouldnt take a tour there. I dont take tours to any destination. I said nothing about Chichen itself.
No reason to go to Cancun to get to Tulum. Not only does ADO have the direct bus from Chichen to Tulum but several other choices from Valladolid.
