Westerners require security escort in Niger outside Niamey?
I read that effective January 30, Westerners in Niger require a security escort if they wish to travel outside Niamey. Is this being strictly enforced? I have an upcoming trip where I was planning to enter by road from Ouagadougou and then travel to Niamey. Has anyone done this in the last two weeks? Is a security escort now required, and would a Westerner who shows up unannounced be turned away at the border?http://niamey.usembassy.gov/em_013013.html

That's an interesting development. Anyone know of anything so sweeping elsewhere in the region? (I am aware only of the loose requirement for armed escorts when leaving Hargeisa, Somaliland.)You may want to Skype the number listed for the embassy to find out whether the requirement applies to arrivals overland.

The user who made post #29 in this thread was recently (or, maybe, is still) in Niger (take a look at the dates of the post and at its content) and should be able to provide you the updated info you are requesting. That user seems to be on the road so I don't know if that user will see your post. It could be a good idea to cross-post your question in that thread in order to increase the probabilities of get an answer from that user (as PMs aren't working now/yet).
