http://www.megabus.com. It's kinda the done thing to buy any coffee or meals for any drivers who pick you up if you're hitch hiking. Note that it's illegal to be hitch hiking on motorways.

So have you got a total travel budget of £60?

If so why not blow it all on a nice comfy journey one way and hitch the other? You can get a berth in a sleeper with ScotRail from £19 (if you are flexible on dates and are booking quite far in advance) and or a seat on the sleeper train from £27

And while Fwoggie is right that you can’t hitch on a motorway itself, you can of course hitch from slip roads and service stations (providing you stand ‘upstream’ of the motorway sign), but am sure you know that.

East Coast have some low fares for London Edinburgh which can be booked AROUND 12 weeks before date of travel. The precise date is on their homepage

You could also consider the Megabus sleeper coach service to Glasgow

Sometimes the Megabus trip is a train journey, still for the same Megabus fare. have a look at various dates and times on its website.
