Bus La Serena to San Pedro de Atacama

We're planning to take the bus from La Serena to San Pedro de Atacama the end of February and wondered if anyone's done that and how long it takes. What's the best bus line to take? Would you stop overnight somewhere on the way? Thanks. Any help would be greatly appreciated. We've been in Chile about 3 weeks now and are thinking of also taking the road across the pass to Salta from the Atacama. Can anyone tell us how long you're at an altitude of over 12,000 feet? I don't do real well with high altitude, but for a day I should be okay. thanks again,

I got a bus from La Serena at 4pm and arrived in Calama at 9am and then got another bus to San Pedro (can't remember how long that took but I think it was only 2 or 3 hours).

May I suggest spending a few days at Pesco Elqui before heading North? Wonderful place to spend a few days (I had trouble tearing myself away). To get there just get a bus from La Serena.

Enjoy

re the Paso de Jama (from San Pedro de Atacama to Salta via Susques, which is the principal route). We did this by car from San Pedro to Tilcara, however the route is the same as far as Purmamarca. Journey time was similar to the bus journey time. It took us 9 hours 45 minutes from San Pedro to Tilcara with stops. According to the GPS we were over 11,000 feet for 7 hours 10 minutes, during which we were over 12,000ft for 5 hours 50 minutes.

look at http://www.sanpedroatacama.com/como_llegar/desde_argentina.htm for more information.

It takes about 15 hours, so I recomend to travel at night. You can buy your tickets at www.turbus.cl. This page gives you numer code, and you retire your ticket at bus station.
If you have a good health, you only should move slowly, to don't have any unwanted reation.

If you need more information, only skype me.

Good travel!
