Buses Tegucigalpa, Honduras to Leon, Nicaragua

Hi,

My friend and I are on a whistle stop tour of Central America and looking for the quickest way from Utila, Honduras to Leon, Nicaragua. We have a flight from Utila to Tegucigalpa which lands at 17:25 so the question is, are there any night or late buses that run from there to Leon or are we stuck there overnight? If we have to stay overnight are there any really early buses? All I can find is Ticabus at 9:30am and a possible 6am Transnica bus (which I cannot confirm) and ideally we would like to get to Leon earlier as we have to leave the next day!

Any help is greatly appreciated!

That's the only two companies that I see online making the trip. There will be a bus terminal in Honduras, ask the drivers or the taxi what time a bus leaves for Nicaragua. You can catch a bus from Matagalpa to Leon at 3pm. If you get to Managua you can take a bus every 15 minutes to Leon until 8pm. You should consider staying more than a day in Leon. It's awesome here, been living 2 1/2 years, plenty of cheap hostels to stay at and plenty of parties.

There are loads of buses, but they are not all international ones.

They don't go at night, and they don't go fast.

If you sleep in Tegus, you can take an early morning bus (like a minibus) from the stop there (the hotel will know where it is...you'll need a taxi to get there) to the border with Nica.

Then walk across the border.

Then a bus to Ocotal.Another from there to Esteli. And another from there to Leon.

That will all take maybe 7-8 hours, depending on connections and border crossings...so if you leave really early you could get to Leon by around 2pm.

Thanks everyone! We would love to stay for longer in Leon but we have only 2 weeks to hit Central America so it's a very tight schedule!
I think the local buses are the winners then!

Might you be able to give a few suggestions for a multi day stay in Leon (from a local view)?
