Only 8 Days in NicaraguaHi, I am going to Nicaragua for vacation on Feb. 23 for 8 days. I know that this is far too short a time, but I have limited vacation. So, I have read all of the various itinerary posts on the forum. This will be my first time in Nicaragua and from reading guidebooks and the posts here I thought that I should at least visit Granada and Leon. I probably only have enough time to maybe visit one other place. I have heard that Matagalpa, Esteli and Las Penitas are nice. Any advice from Nica experts on which of these three would make sense for a first timer in Nicaragua during this season? Thanks in advance for any constructive recommendations.

1What about Granada and Isla Ometepe, city and nature..?!
Granada, Leon and Las Penitas, cities and beach, will be a good combi as well.
Granada,Esteli/Somoto canyon and Leon can be done in 8 days as well although you will have to hurry i guess..........
Matagalpa and Esteli are not interesting as a city, it"s the surrounding area/nature.

2it all depends on your interests and i agree with globaler you shouldn't miss ometepe. so if you stay south of managua, try granada, laguna de apoyo and ometepe. but be warned, ometepe should be enjoyed with at least three to four days!
mountains, city, and beach combo: leon, las penitas, esteli (and include tisey and miraflor, lots of mountains, hiking and trees)
if you like cities and beaches: leon, las penitas, jiquilillo
good luck planning your trip, it's short!

3Funny - I have 10 full days, and due to geography, shortened time, and a lack of desire to spend my time on buses, I have to skip Leon, Las Penitas, & Jiquillo - yet, I think I would prefer that combo to Granada - Ometepe - SJDS. Ah well. Can't have it all!

4Depends on your interests of course...
Personally with that little time I'd stay in one part of the country...and so I'd go with Granada and Ometepe as well.
Leon is great but you will use a lot of travelling time getting there..so too Esteli etc.Leon is also similar to Granada for many things, while Ometepe is quite different.

5& days is a nice amount of time to head to Granada 2 nights, then to Ometepe 3-4 nights. You could maybe squeeze in a night in Leon, depending on your interest.
For more adventure and off the beateb path, consider a Ometepe and the Rio San Juan via boats, San Carlos and El Castillo refuges...but that is very dependent on boat schedules and roughing it...

7You think? Laos is the smallest and its 6 hours from LPG to VV, and 2 hours to Vientaine, then a overnight bus or flight to Paske, the Bolevan area and 4000 Islands/Mekong is about the only short distances and easy areas to go in a short amount of time...
Things move slow in both countries, the difference is Managua is pain...

8Roads in Nicaragua improved a lot. Leon to Esteli or Matagalpa took a 5/6 hour busride on a bumpy road. Last time i was there it was a smooth 3 hour public busride from Leon to Esteli, a direct bus without having to chance bus at the enpalme. No need to go to Managua.
Granada to Leon can be done quickly by minibus, change bus at UCA
Tourist buses are even more faster but more expensive.....

10solo, you're of course right, transport in laos was slow but pretty painless...as was nicaragua, actually. i was more thinking of our endless bus and train rides in china, long slow busses in tibet, that sort of thing. i'm just glad that thanks to your help (and that of others) that i missed the pain of managua!
