Patagonia - The Andes

Hi. I am currently in El Calafate seeing the sites and I have basically a week left before I have to be in Santiago and heading home.

I am considering 1 of 2 journeys north- I wondered if someone can give their opinion on a few of these places.

1) Bus to Torres del Paine for say 2 days, then to Puerto Natalas and catch the 3-day ferry thru the fjords, and bus the last 12 or so hrs to Santiago.

OR

2) Fly to San Martin for a few days (already been to Bariloche), then to Mendoza (maybe Capilla del Monte) for a few days, and then Santiago.

Thanks.

Hi there,

Interesting options! I can't really comment on the validity of one over the other, it will be a matter of personal taste.

1. 2 days in Torres del Paine is not enough to really get the most of the park - you'd need to double it I think. The Navimag is one of LP's pet "things" - it's always amazed me quite how much they go on and on and on about this ferry all the time. I think it does sound like fun if you get very lucky with the weather - otherwise it can be three days of low cloud and damp, cold, drizzle. Even in good weather, it is still essentially 3 days of sitting on a boat. If this is what you are looking for, then great.

2. I think this option could allow you to make more efficient use of your time. How about renting a car in Bariloche and driving the Ruta de Siete Lagos? This is a beautiful scenic drive. You then have the option of continuing further and seeing Parque Nacional Lanín. This is more than achievable in 5 nights after arrival in Bariloche. It might be possible to pick up a car in Bariloche and return it in San Martín de los Andes (o/w rentals can attract craaazy charges in Argentina though!!), from where you can continue on to Mendoza and Santiago via Neuquén.

Given that we're in mid-February have you even checked availability on the Navimag ferry? This is high season and I think it gets pretty full well in advance! This might help you make your decision...

All the best

Will
