It was never banned. What you read was typical anti government propoganda probably from the Eth diaspora in USA..........3
What AddisAdvisor says is quite true...It's amazing how the world's newspapers and media blindly accepted the idea that Skype was to be banned, when it was clearly stated otherwise by the government (particulary the spokesperson Shiferaw) and it kept working during the whole period (i used with little problems other than the usual poor network).
Of course the "scandal" had some issue in it, namely another controversial law rubber-stamped through the House of People's Representives (i.e. Parliament) seemed to suggest a closer monitoring of open online networks. This was passed by a Parliament with the remarkable proportion of 99% pro-Government parties,(literally, ony 2 out of over 500 members are considered "opposition"). So the situation is definitely worth a worry or two, but from that to peddling blatant lies by the supposedly "free" media in the West is worrying. It's seems a bit like the Horsemeat in the Uk scandal: once one crucial bit of news on Ethiopia is critically polluted, how can we be sure of the other news they feed us?
Just food for thought,
