Staying in Camp Curry, is it safe (HPS virus)?

Hi,

Three friends and I are planning on visiting Yosemite April 11-13 (should we stay one more day?) and I was thinking about staying in one of the tents or cabins at Camp Curry. I've read about the issues with the HPS virus, and I was wondering if it's safe to stay there at that time?

Their website says: 'Hantavirus and Curry Village

Several recent cases of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) have been linked to the insulated signature tent cabins in Curry Village. These tent cabins are not being used for accommodations at this time. Learn more about the continued response to HPS and what it means for visiting the park.'

But when booking the acommodation, there don't seem to be any problems. I didn't actually book it btw.

Does anybody know more about the safety of staying there, or has anyone been there recently? If it turns out not to be safe, are there any alternatives in the same price range that are still available?

Thanks, Ruben.

It's fine. I was there last September, a few weeks after they closed the signature tent cabins.

Make sure you get a heated cabin.

That notice has been up for over 6 months.

I just looked up a couple of disease reporting databases. All but one case were people who stayed in the Signature Cabins in Curry Village between June 1 and August 28, 2012. The other person had been camping in high country. There have been no new cases since the tents were closed. It is mandatory that cases of hantavirus be reported to public health officials.

The other tent cabins, the ones that are still being used, do not have the same kind of construction as the signature cabins, so are not suitable for mice to set up housekeeping. They are not associated with the outbreak. The park service did a major disinfection of these cabins, anyway.

US public health agencies are NOT cautioning against staying in Yosemite.

You might want to look at Hantavirus in Yosemite

That odds of getting that disease is on par with being attacked by a bear...or struck by lighting.
