Mittenwald

We'e thinking of spending 4-6 days in Mittenwald. If you've been there what do you recommend by way of biking around town as well as longer routes around the area, not mountain biking but casual. Any experience with bike shops there? This would be in early May and I hope the weather will be warm enough. Any suggestions about places to stay? Is it as spectacular as they say? Thanks, Carolyn

Try to get hold of the Kompass maps: Wettersteingebirge-Zugspitzgebiet and perhaps also Mittenwald-Garmisch. They give not only walking paths but also cycling paths (Radrouten). There are masses of possibilities starting with a cycling path west of Mittenwald to Elmau and Schachen (hunting lodge of Ludwig II, if I remember correctly). Cycling is a good option in Leutasch, a pleasant valley just inside Austria.

Yes, Mittenwald is set quite spectacularly but early May may not be the best time of the year to visit it: There is usually not enough snow on the mountains for skiing but too much snow for hiking and climbing. Cablecars may be closed for the same reason.
Cycling is certainly a good option; a quick search for "Fahrradverleih" turns up a few places that rent out bicycles. The temperatures should be quite good for cycling but be prepared for many slopes on your route, no matter which way you're heading.
