Samana, Las Galeras, Parque National Los Haitises buses and hostels

Hi folks,
Just booked a one week holiday in the Dominican Republic. I'll be flying directly into Samana from New York on JetBlue, staying for 6 nights. I already have a reservation with Hostel La Hacienda in Las Galeras. I'm also thinking of going to Parque National Los Haitises, since it seems to be in the area. I'm thinking of either splitting my time between the two places, or of visiting Parque National Los Haitises on a daytrip from Las Galeras. I've a couple of questions:

1. How can I get from Samana Airport to Las Galeras using public transportation? How much time/money does it take? Any tricky transfers?
2. How can I get from las Galeras to Parque National Los Haitises? How much time/money does it take? Any tricky transfers?
3. Would it make sense to do the PN Los Haitises as day trip?
4. Any recommendations for affordable accomodations in PN Los Haitises (I'm paying $28 for a private room in las Galeras)?
5. How would I get from PN los Haites to the airport? How much time/money does it take? Any tricky transfers?

Thanks!

as far as I know there is no accommodation in the park - it is a "wilderness" area, and quite isolated because not only is it a protected area, but is hard to get to by land because of the terrain. I have been there, from Las Terrenas. We got there by boat, from Sanchez. I think there may be trips from Samana town. You could ask your hotel owners - I am sure they would know. I think it is quite likely there will be day trips to Las Haitises accessible from LG. I think day trips are all that you will find.

Getting from Las Haitises to the airport - pretty sure you can't stay in LH, so this won't concern you.

There is a website - dr1.com, that has a forum with a ravel section - if noone here can help you, take a look on there for transport from El Catey to Las Galeras.

It's been 3-4 years since I've been down there - things may have changed re: visiting Las Haitises.

wulfruny - thanks for the advice. I was wondering if I should look for accommodation near the the park, but given your feedback, I'll stay in Las Galeras the entire time. That'll actually work out well, the hostel I found online looks great. I didn't know about dr1.com either.

I haven't stayed here but was recently looking online at this place within Las Haitises, it look like a good way to experience the park if you wanted to stay there.

you will probably have a hard time tearing yourself away from Las Galeras, for Las Haitises, home, or anywhere else.

I've been to Los Haitises from Las Terrenas. We drove to Samana, took a boat ride across the bay, and then took motos to the actual park. The boats seem to leave Samana regularly - we didn't have any problems waiting for a boat or anything like that. It does take pretty long for 15 miles, I can't remember exactly, but something between 1 to 2 hours.

Thanks livetraveldance. Sounds like I can organize my own trip to Los Haitises.

Hey OP- I will be interested to hear how you got to Las Galeras by public transport. I have been to Las Galeras by flying first into SDQ so I was thrilled to see the new jet blue flight that could have me on the beach the same day!!! I am considering a June visit for a few weeks.

Its easy enough to get to Las Galeras by gua gua from Samana, but I am wondering how to get to Samana or even Sanchez by gua gua....I'd like to know where to find a gua gua from El Catey. So when you figure it out please let us know! Thanks!
