1To the best my knowledge foreigners can not bring a vehicle into China. You also would need a guide to be with you if you do go thru all the trouble of getting thru border, getting a Chinese Drivers License. There have been reports you get thru with some bribe/false paperwork near a Vietnam border but that to me is shooting in the dark.
If you want to buy a motorbike in China, and that is another issues all unto itself, if over 125CC. You again, need to go thru the process of a Chinese drivers license.
Also, for motorcycling. its best to use a motorcycle forum, I suggest Horizons Unlimited or ADV Rider.
As a motorcyclist, I would not be too keen on motorcycling the eastern half of the country, too congested and accident prone. I lived in Shanghai, I looked at every angle, pain in the arse, not worth it.

I did a big long 3 month trip around China in 2011on a 150cc Chinese made bike and could help with your route planning if you want. There is some truly excellent riding in China. SoloHobo is right, driving through eastern China is generally not much fun. I would definitely recommend riding through Yunnan, Sichuan, Qinghai and Xinjiang.
Having said that though, getting a used motorcycle into China a nightmare in terms of paperwork, expense and waiting for approvals. Buying a motorcycle once you're inside China might be an easier option.
And then there's the license issue. Because only Chinese licenses are recognised in China, you'll need to get either a temporary license or the real thing (you'll need to have a residency permit for this). I'm not sure about the process of getting a temporary license for a foreigner, but I'm pretty sure only registered Chinese motorcycle touring companies (there are some good ones) can get them. If you drive in China without a license you risk all sorts of problems. I've had my license checked numerous times.
I met some cyclists riding up from Laos to Russia who said that they would be able to make that distance within 6 weeks, so that's another option for you. Chinese tourist visas are 30 days, with the option of extending the visa within China for another 30 days.
