Philadelphia is kinda my hometown. Great for history, but not worth more than 2 full days. If you are in to antiquing there’s a kind of interesting town just north of there called Washington’s Crossing. It probably should be developed into a major torusit site, but for now it has not been.
East of Philly are the Jersey beaches.
From South to North the first two are Cape May (a little high end), and Wildwood (working class but with great amusement parks). Go a little further north and you encounter Atlantic city, known for its shows, dining and casinos.
Once you get into Northern NJ the beach towns are so seedy we make reality TV shows about them.
Personally I’m fond of DC, but in summer it can be kinda humid. I wouldn’t avoid it, but I’d plan to deal with it.
Hope this helps,
Enjoy your journey.

You may be thinking of Ocean City Md. (the town next door.)
I consider OC to be mid-ranged (classier than VA Beach), but Rehoboth is filled with upscale beach houses and completely lacking in roller coaster and drunk rowdy teenagers.
It's been a while since I was there, but at the time, it struck me a a place that was kinda okay for locals having a cheap vacation, but not something I'd do if I were flying all the way from Australia.

EAST COAT USA
We are meeting friends in Manhatten on July 1st, for 5 days then going on to Portland Boston, Cap Cod Province Town. etc. however we arrive on the east coast on June 24th, and would like some suggestions on which town/towns to stay at and explore between 24th - 30th. Did the California coast last year, and love looking thru small towns, specialty shops, nice deli's restaurants etc. We are 51 and 56 so have energy, but not heaps and heaps of it. We like just looking around, doesn't have to be full on excitement, but certainly some interest. Have considered Washington or Philadelphia, but perhaps somewhere like Virginia Beach would be good, not sure as haven't been there, doesn't have to be full on as we will be busy in New York, we are from Australia and we have a budget of $250 per day to spend, this doesn't include accomm, that is seperately budgeted. Has anyone any suggestions. I look at the map and there are just so many places that appeal, but just can't decide on one. Thanks for any help.3
Virginia Beach is not at all quaint. It's honky-tonk. For charming little towns on the water in that neighborhood, you want the South Fork of Long Island, but will cost you. Or perhaps Cape Cod. Newport is good too.4
Head to DC, all the museums are free, and the memorials are great, then head to Colonial Williamsburg, or train to Charleston SC..a great old historical town with a great food scene, plantations and gorgeous homes...5
Okay so June 24th-30th are the unplanned parts right?- Va Beach is entirely skippable. I was there at a bad time but I don’t think it get’s a whole lot better.
- Ocean City Maryland is kind of mid ranged, and gives you easy access to Assateague/Chincoteague which is said to be quite the experience.
- Rehobeth Beach DE, is even classier, but it’s kind of, well it’s almost completely gay. But don’t worry they don’t mack-out in the streets or anything. They’re cool.

Rehoboth Beach is also honky-tonk, unless cotton candy, funnel cakes, and bumper cars on the boardwalk is your idea of class.8

Virginia beach is a very nice place to visit with lots to do. Back Bay NWR and secluded Sandbridge Beach on the south end. Plus the weather and water temp. is better than the beaches heading north. Well worth checking out. In my opinion not at all as previously described.12
There are some very nice places very NEAR Virginia beach. I recall driving north and thinking "I just left the ghetto and entered paradise."It's been a while since I was there, but at the time, it struck me a a place that was kinda okay for locals having a cheap vacation, but not something I'd do if I were flying all the way from Australia.
