15Phew, particularly in reply to mredman, can't I just play it by ear re hotel bookings, we do intend to take a car so can move on - although I don't want to find that I spend my whole holiday - short as it is - looking for accommodation!! I really just wanted to go where the fancy takes us, and play it by ear.

Yes, of course you can. However, you may need to spend a lot of additional time in that car while you look for a room. If you are prepared to accept that, there is no reason to book in advance.
Of course, some of the driving can be stressful. As you know, many Spanish towns and villages were built long before the car was invented. But you have visited Spain before so you know what to expect.
Would I play it by ear as Semana Santa approaches? Hell, no, but that´s just me who lives in Spain. Enjoy your trip.

17We recently traveled with in-laws who planned the trip who planned the trip. We literally spent the first evening driving around looking for a hotel. After that the next morning we decided where our overnight stop would be and went onto Booking.com to select a place using price, location and guest reviews to decide. Made for much easier relations.

Well you know, it just depends. Are you willing to trade time spent on the trip for more freedom and adventure?
A few years ago I was in Greece. The six of us drove into Tripoli, no reservation, looking for a room. Turns out some kind of a festival was going on, and guess what, there are no rooms. Zilch, nada. So me and one of my friends walked into a bar, asking if they knew of a place that had some rooms available. Nobody speaks English, so the guys calls some other guy, who finds this woman who speaks English. So I tell her over the phone our plight, hand his phone back and she explains it to them. Six guys all pick out their phones and start calling around. One of them finds a place just a short drive away. Since we're now also hopelessly lost, he gets on his motorcycle and drives us into the right direction.
Back in 2009 we drove all the way down to Sicily. In Agrigento, one elderly guy walks up to me, and asks me if I have a room reserved. Uh, no I don't. He tells me that for xx euros to stay with him. He also offered (for additional cost) dinner and breakfast included. In the end we spent hours in his home, with a direct view of Valle di Templi, we were given traditional Sicilian 3 course meal for dinner, excellent breakfast, and we spent hours talking about life in Sicily, how it had changed, what is going on now.
Was getting a place to stay every night a hassle? HELL YES. But then when you think about, what are some of my brightest memories from these places?

19Thanks so much to all particularly in answer to my query about having to book accommodation ahead more recently (I have been having a problem and tried to post my reply some days ago and the site just wouldn't let me, have hopefully now sorted it out so apologies for taking so long to get back on this , I have felt so rude, impolite!). Certainly I shall book ahead for Easter weekend but it makes it so difficult having to book the whole holiday ahead and certainly takes the spontaneity out of it!
