Hello,
I am looking for information about visiting Abkhazia from Georgia.
1)I understand the crossing is over a bridge near Zugdidi. Will the Georgians let me cross over and come back after a few days?
2) Is it necessary to arrange the Abkhaz visa in advance (via Internet I suppose) or is it possible to get it at the border? From what I´ve read elsewhere the cost is $ 20.
Many thanks.

(Alas, all the ThornTree history on this has been lost!)I visited back in 2010. See my notes on Abakhazia and Sukhumi for details.
Yes, the Georgian authorities will let you cross over and then return a few days later.
In fact, if they ask, it is important to say that you will be returning, as otherwise they might suspect you of planning to exit from Abkhazia into Russia, which is currently an illegal border crossing under Georgian law.
You need to apply for permission to the Abkhazian authorities in advance. Take a look at the MFAA website . Apply early, but they typically delay final approval until a week or so before your trip. If you are approved you'll get an authorization letter and your name will be added to a list at the checkpoint. After you enter Abkhazia you need to collect and pay for the visa in Sukhumi.
Best wishes, - Graham

I didn't see any motor vehicles go through while I was there. A horse drawn cart was acting as a taxi across the frontier area.Given the generally tense state of the border (on both sides) I am a little dubious as to whether they will let private vehicles through. But I don't know for certain, sorry.
