New york or Sanfransico ?? which is your favourite City ad why ??
HI There.....so im 29 female and STILL trying to decide on where to go for my 30th. Im from London and want to do something really special on my birthday. I have never been to America so a city break would be really great. looking for, good food, great scenes, excellent shopping lots of things to do and see......
If you had to vote for San Francisco or New York as your favourite City , which would you choose and why ?
thanks :0

Can you remind us what time of the year you're going? It's really pointless for us to tell you what we like because your interests are probably different. I like both cities. I've lived in both. NYC is a lot more happening. SF is relatively small. There is good shopping in both, but more unique shopping in NYC since this is probably the fashion capital in the US (many designers are based in NYC and LA). SF has more interesting trips outside of the city, i.e. you can go wine tasting to Napa or explore beautiful coastal views driving to Monterey south of SF or even further down the coast if you have time. NYC is more fast-paced. SF is more laid back. There is a great food scene in both places, but somewhat more options in NYC just because it's a much bigger city and more packed with places. Nightlife is good in both, but there are a lot more bars per square foot in NYC.

WHEN... and for how long?? They are very different places. New York is huge, bursting at the seems, hectic, unlimited art and culture and food.SF is naturally beautiful, laid back, but also lots of art and culture and food.
I think you will feel farther away from London in SF - it's obviously literally farther away, but also in terms of climate and natural setting and architecture etc.
Both will strain the pocketbook for hotel type accommodations, but NYC a bit more.

If I had to vote I would split the vote and my visit. But I see nothing in your interests about nature or the outdoors--2 areas in which San Francisco (and environs) is far more interesting. So that should point you towards New York. The airfare, of course, is going to be less expensive to New York as well--more cash to spend on making your trip special.7
San Francisco. It's smaller, walkable.8
The flight to New York is about 4 to 5 hours shorter than a flight to SF. And cheaper. That would be a big issue for me. Otherwise, both cities are great to visit. You will eat well and won't be bored.11
I've noticed that many people (not just in this thread) say that one thing they really enjoy about New York is the fast paced, high energy, big city feel of the place. That's the reason I do not enjoy it. It overwhelms me. I much prefer the more laid-back feel that SF has. I'm glad to have seen New York (I think every American should, at least one) and to have gotten a feel for what it's about, but I wouldn't voluntarily return for a vacation unless it was a very special occasion or someone else was paying for everything.
But then, you just might find that laid back California feeling dull and boring.

you still haven't told us time of year, length of trip and, are you travelling alone? if shopping is high on your priority list - probably new york. also, if seeing shows... flight time is a big thing. considering this is a special occassion i might consider to the longer distance trip to san fran now. more likely you could get back to ny in the future. i haven't been to new york but if i went to but i think 4 days would be enough for me. for a week, i'd choose san fran and enjoy some of the places outside of city and do a tour of alcatraz. san fran is beautiful.14
You can explore most of the city of SF in one long day, 2 would cover the majority of sites.
I'd disagree on that, but of course it depends on what you want to do. Me, I'd allot a half day for Alcatraz, a half day (or more) for Golden Gate Park, including the Cal Academy. Maybe go back again for the deYoung or the Japanese Tea Garden. A couple of hours minimum for a walk across the Golden Gate Bridge, or, better yet, the better part of a day for a bike ride across. A ride on a cable car (and the concomitant waiting in line). A couple of hours for the Museum of Modern Art. Then there's still the Palace of Fine Arts, a stroll around Fisherman's Wharf and a stroll around Chinatown (if you've never been there, you gotta get those out of the way). Pottering around the Ferry Building. Checking out the view from Coit Tower. The sea lions at Pier 39. MIssion Dolores.
And that doesn't even include shopping or wandering around a few neighborhoods.
