What is the rest of your itinerary in full including dates and airports?
What are your interests?

None of those save you much money with a JR Pass.

Your suggestion is higly appreciated.

If the weather is nice and you wish to see Mt Fuji then Kawaguchiko or Hakone are both reasonable day trips. Hakone - usually buy the Hakone Free Pass at Odawara Station, 3900 yen.
Kawaguchiko - pay for the Fujikyu train from Otsuki, 1100 yen each way.

Access to Nikko is fully covered by JR Pass and it will be nice up there but still quite cool, and maybe the scenery won't be as nice due to the tail end of winter.

It doesn't make much sense to spend money on a JR pass, just so you can save money...

No. I have already purchased a JR pass and I want to make a day trip from Tokyo using the pass for one day only.
I want to know where I should go using it rather so that I don't need to pay for other transportation to go there.
I will make other day trips to other places by paying for the transportation myself.
Sorry for the misunderstanding.
cheers,

You didn't really answer any of the questions.

From your list Nikko probably makes the most sense from a cost saving point of view.

All of them are cheap enough to do without a JR pass though.

I would probably go to Yamadera and perhaps Hiraizumi if you can squeeze it in - you would need to leave Tokyo extremely early to do both. The Hayabusa takes 2 hours to Sendai where you change to local trains. You need a seat reservation for the Hayabusa and Hayate.

I am travelling to japan in the next two weeks as a UK citizen and wanted to know the size of the visa or stamp one receives at immigration. I am running out of pages and the two remaining clear ones are for my Indian visa.
thanks. P

Tokyo_girl,
Thank for yr info regarding using my 14 days JR pass travelling north to Yamadera and HIraizumi on day 1.
I will definitely consider that as I will be travelling South West of Tokyo from the 2nd day onward:

My 14 days JR pass route will be:
day 1: day trip from Tokyo (up north or around Tokyo)
day 2: Tokyo -> Nagoya -> Takayama
day 3: Takayama ->Shirakawa-go -> Kanazawa (via highway bus)
day 4: Kanazawa
day 5: Kanazawa -> Kyoto
day 6: Kyoto
day 7: Kyoto -> Osaka
day 8: Osaka -> Nara -> Himeji
day 9: Osaka -> Hiroshima, Miyajima (day trip)
day 10: Hiroshima -> Kagoshima
day 11: Kagoshima -> Kumamoto
day 12: Kumamoto -> Aso San
day 13: Kumamoto -> Fukuoka
day 14: Fukuoka -> Nagasaki

Do you recommend these 2 places Yamadera and HIraizumi are more interesting than Kamakura and Nikko near Tokyo?
If you do, would you be able to plan a day trip itinerary to visit both for me from Tokyo ?
If it is too rushy to visit both, which one should I drop.
I am abit worried the local train in Sendai is not frequent enough to connect the Shinkansen from Tokyo.
cheers,
Macho

I love Kamakura. It's a great town, and I'd thoroughly recommend it.

Nikko is quite a pricey trip, but also utterly unique. It'll be a push cramming it all in in a single day, but well worth the try.

If you'd like to relax, Mt. Takao is great for hiking, and you can take it as easily or push it hard as you want.

Yokohama is also only about half an hour from Tokyo.

Any one at the Khumb Mela in Allahabad what is the situation now that the royal bathing day has come to an end, wondering about heading out there for the remaining three weeks.
Regards,

Depends on your interests,as above.

There is no universal 'more interesting' place.

Last time I had a JR pass,apart from the usual moving around I also used it for the shinkansen from Kyoto to Nagoya...a day trip to see sumo ;-)

Nikko and kamakura are both more interesting that Hiraizumi IMO .

Yamadera is a bit different, but is a sling temple.

Part if the reason for suggesting it was a place that is easily doable but would give good value on the jr pass - unlike Nikko and Kamakura.
