4 weeks in Spain (try again)
Hi TTsPosted this a couple of days ago but it seems to have fallen off the site (not sure why) so I'm re-posting just in case anyone else has suggestions. Thanks to those who replied - I will add another day in Granada on your universal reccommendations! Turns out I may be able to add an extra 4 days to my holiday (yay!) - any suggestions for other places worth seeing that would fit into this itinerary?
Hi Fellow Travellers
Thanks to all who helped me out with the RENFE timetables!
I've put together a rough itinerary for my 4 weeks in Spain in September. At the end of the 4 weeks, I will be attending a conference in Barcelona 23-27th September which will tie me up from 9am-6pm daily, but will still be able to see museums etc in the evenings.
I'd be grateful for your opinions/suggestions re this itinerary especially whether I've allocated appropriate time to places. I like just wandering around places, soaking up the ambience and exploring the neighbourhoods. I probably won't go to all the sights/museums but the ones I do visit, I'm likely to spend alot of time in. I am not interested in a whirlwind tour where you just get off the train, take a photo then move onto the next "sight".
day 1 - arrive Madrid afternoon
day 2,3,4 - in Madrid
day 5 - day trip to Segovia
day 6 - day trip to Toledo
day 7 - Madrid to Salamanca and overnight in Salamanca (1st train is 0845h and It takes 2.5h to get to Salamnca so presumably a day trip from Madrid will be too rushed?)
day 8 - Salamanca
day 9 - Salamanca to Madrid to Seville. Arrive Seville afternoon
day 10,11 - Seville
day 12 - day trip to Cordoba
day 13 -Seville to Granada. Arrive Granada afternoon.
day 14 - Alhambra. Possibly overnight train to Barcelona? (OK if trenhotel has sleepers; if not may stay overnight in Granada, then train back to Seville next morning then fast train to Barcelona. Arrive Barcelona night-time. Would be good if the AVE from Seville to Barcelona stopped at Granada enroute but I can't see if these AVEs have stops or are they all direct express services? Also does anyone know if the scenery on the Seville to Barcelona is nice - if so might be preferable to the overnight train?)
day 15 - spare day for possible travel Granada to Barcelona depending on route chosen (see above)
day 16-22 - Barcelona. Seems like a long time but I factoring in the possibility of the festivities around La Merce being 21st-24th September so will be lots to see in addition to the usual sights in Barcelona.
day 23-27 - Conference in Barcelona
day 28 - Depart Barcelona.
What do you think?
Thanks

By the time you have gone back to Seville then changed trains you might as well just take the slow train or bus from Granada to Madrid. Also why are you going back to Madrid from Salamanca when you can get a direct bus from Salamanca to Seville. www.alsa.es. It is quite a good plan otherwise although you might want to miss out Cordoba to give yourself more time in Seville but you can decide that when you get there.6
*4 the problem with the AVE is you have to go back via Madrid, so to me makes more sense to take the 7 hour bus trip from Salamanca to SevilleIt's all a matter of preferences and budget. Train from Salamanca to Madrid + commuter train from Chamartín station to Atocha station + AVE from Madrid to Sevilla is quicker than a 7h+ direct bus from Salamanca to Sevilla but the bus is far cheaper than the train (even if you get one of the heavily discounted fares for the AVE train). There's a quicker overnight bus from Salamanca to Sevilla but a 6h 15m overnight bus isn't everyone's cup of tea.
