Bangkok to Ko Tao (travel advice) for PADI diving - 9th or 10th of Feb 2013

Hiya,

I'm very interested in doing a PADI Open water course in Ko Tao.

I arrive into Bangkok airport around 4pm on the 9th of February and plan to leave on the 9th or 10th of February for Ko Tao via Chumpon.

Is anyone travelling that way too or can you advise what is the best way to get Chumpon i.e. bus/train and ferry to Ko Tao? Where should I go to get tickets?

Where would you recommend staying and doing the diving course?
I see some websites say accommodation is included in the price of the course?

Cheers
Chris

You have many options on how to get to Koh Tao. You can fly to Chumphon (Solar Air, Nok Air) or Samui (Air Asia) but this is quite expensive. You can get a joint ticket for the bus and boat anywhere on Ko San Road, this is the cheaper option. If you decide to do this, go with the Lomprayah company, not the Songserm (very bad reputation). The last option is to go by train, nice and cheap, and you can get some sleep too.

As for choosing a dive school, have a look on Trip Advisor in the 'Things to do' section. Here you will find the majority of dive schools with honest reviews. Choose a couple you like the sound of and get in contact. You will find the prices are very similar and most dive schools will offer 3 or 4 nights included in the course price.

Hope this helps.

We dove with Big Bubble Dive Company in 2009 and had a great experience with them. The accommodation was included in the price. $275 for the 3 day course (which included all equipment, PADI books, lunch on the boat, 3 nights accommodation in a nice hut on the beach). Prices have probably changed since we were there, but the company was really good. Enjoy!
