Can anyone recommend a good tour company?

Hi!

I'm planning a trip to Kenya for late August/September time and I am hoping to use a travel company for a tour package as I am travelling alone. I've travelled to India and Australia alone, however this is my first time in Africa and feel it's the safer option.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a trusted travel company to book with? I know the obvious companies are those such as STA Travel, in the past u have found this to be over priced.

Any advice would be great!

Thanks
Laura

Anything you book in your home country will be overpriced compared to anything you book when in Kenya.

But you will have peace of mind that it is all ready when you arrive and in most cases, the agencies use good and relaible local companies.

Where booking when you arrive can be more hit or miss. And travelling solo, if the local companies do not have anyone else doing the route youwant to do on the days you want to do, you will pay throught the nose, or not be able to go at all.

I usually travel solo but to keep costs down I'm joining a group. I'm travelling with Exodus but there's loads of tour companies Intrepid, Dragoman, Geckos etc. You can try to join a tour with one of the hostels such as Milmani backpackers on arrival in Nairobia.

Laura, the correct answer may depend on how much of your time you will be spending on animal safaris. If you are really coming for the national parks, you should take care of it in one go and book an all-inclusive safari package. If you can spare a day in Nairobi, then the advice given above, to book in Kenya, is good advice. It will be cheaper.

On the other hand, if you are more beach-oriented or just plan to look around the country and experience culture, then all you really need to bring is a good guide book. Getting around in Kenya is straightforward.

Hi Laura, If costs are of concern then joining a group will certainly reduce then. You can contact a Daniel of Africa equatorial safaris, they gave us a good personalized service in our last trip. Best of luck.

Tour groups you could look at are, Intrepid, Acacia, Dragoman, Kumuka(not advisable), ATC. See the below sites.

http://www.oasisoverland.co.uk/
http://www.dragoman.com/

Hope this helps.

look into all the aforementioned overland companies (not kumuka - they are out of business!), they all offer the same sort of trips, you just need to read the fine print to see what's included and what's not included, especially what meals are included and what excursions are as well. We have travelled with Dragoman and had a wonderful time.

Would definitely not recommend Milimani backpackers!! Found the rooms and place overall quite dirty. Didn't feel very secure there. Had a private room and the door didn't lock, with people trying to enter my room early in the morning. Have stayed in hostels heaps but would not be recommending anyone stay there.
